Hydrate Your Workers and Prosper? Researchers Say, Yes!

Have you had your eight glasses of water today? If you’re like the majority of Americans, chances are you haven’t—which may mean your productivity (and that of your employees) is not as high as it could be. A growing body of research points to physical dehydration as a prevalent productivity problem.

While dehydration may not seem serious at first, especially if you or your team don’t work outdoors, research has shown that it can have a negative impact on decision-making and cognitive performance—and by extension, office productivity. Research on employee dehydration has also correlated this condition with an increased risk of work-related accidents.

How proper hydration can improve office productivity

Experts estimate that up to 80 percent of the U.S. adult population is at least mildly dehydrated on a daily basis. Therefore, it’s likely that significant productivity gains can be made if you educate your workforce on the importance of being hydrated.

Everyone should also be cognizant of drinking enough water and other non-caffeinated and non-alcoholic beverages throughout the day. Making water (instead of soda and coffee) easily available and appealing is a great step in the right direction. You could even provide refillable water bottles with your logo to all employees to help them remember to drink up.

Drink water…and work well

Many of us take for granted the impact of how much (or how little) we drink has on the quality and quantity of our work. Encourage your employees to keep hydrated. It just may improve your company’s overall performance while also promoting a healthy habit.
